Country Stars Talk About the Loss of Glen Campbell [Listen]

The Rhinestone Cowboy is riding off into his final sunset.

An Arkansas native, Campbell is best known for hits including “Gentle On My Mind,” “By The Time I Get To Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Southern Nights.” During his career he won six Grammys, three Grammy Hall of Fame awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award, nine ACM awards and two CMA awards, among other honors.

Before his success as a solo artist, Campbell was an in-demand session musician and member of the famed “Wrecking Crew” of Los Angeles studio pickers. In the early ’60s he played on recordings by artists including Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Nancy Sinatra, Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. He also played guitar on the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds album and was a touring member of the band.

Campbell hosted the TV show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour from 1969-1972. He helped launch the careers of Anne Murray and Jerry Reed, who were series regulars, and later, Alan Jackson, who wrote for Campbell’s publishing company in the early ’90s. Campbell was inducted into the CMHOF in 2005. In 2013, the documentary Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me offered a look into his personal life as he fought Alzheimer’s after being diagnosed with the disease in 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations can be made to the Glen Campbell Memorial Fund at BrightFocus Foundation through the donation page.
