John Mayer paid special tribute to Glen Campbell during his concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Tuesday night (8/8). The news of Campbell’s death at the age of 81 broke just hours before Mayer took the stage, and the singer/songwriter honored the country legend with a performance of the song “Gentle on My Mind,” a John Hartford tune which Glen won two Grammys for in 1968. Before launching into the classic tune, Mayer told the crowd, “Whether I play it right or wrong, I’d rather have played it.”

— Jake Owen also shared a tribute to Glen Campbell following his death. He posted to his Facebook, a video of him giving a powerful acoustic performance of Glen’s iconic tune “Wichita Lineman” and also penned a heartfelt message for the country icon.

— Tonight (8/10), CMT will pay tribute featuring such stars as Blake Shelton, Keith Urban and Reba. “CMT Remembers Glen Campbell” premieres at 8:30 PM. According to CMT, the half-hour special will include rare archival photos, interviews and performances including “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Gentle on My Mind” along with memorable moments from The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour featuring Johnny Cash, John Wayne, Carol Burnett, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and more. The program will also feature Campbell’s final interview with CMT in 2011, in which the Wrecking Crew alum and wife Kim talk about his Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
